Salt & Pepper Shakers, 1930s
Shiny and bright, these salt and pepper shakers graced a Calabria table in the 1930’s as families began to add European traditions to their dining traditions - but interestingly often both shakers were filled with salt. Why no pepper in the shaker? Pepper to Calabrians is “sacred,” and is often brought to the table with great aplomb and ground fresh on the pasta dish. Not wanting to abandon the pepper tradition, many families put salt in both shakers!
