Hand woven Ginestra Tablecloth

Hand woven Ginestra Tablecloth

“Ginestra” is the Italian word for a study and challenging fiber which, in English, is called “broom.” The weaving of ginestra was brought to Calabria by the Jewish women of Spain who were escaping persecution during Inquisition times. These courageous “donne” taught local Calabrian women how to soften the fiber and weave sturdy, long lasting bed sheets, towels and, as featured here, a lovely ginestra table cloth from the 1920’s – just ready to grace your family table!
